One of the several new books presented below is Savitri, The Mother, by Prof. M. V. Seetaraman. It consists of essays published in the 1960s in the journal The Advent. The articles were appreciated by the Mother herself. Here is an excerpt from the book about the role of Savitri in the evolution of man:

In very secret spiritual traditions which keep the overhead ascent as the goal, the evolution of the psychic being reaches a stage when a God of the plane of the Overmind extends and identifies himself with the psychic which has developed an affinity with him and so draws this psyche to his own world of felicity, or Heaven, the overmental world. This is the tradition of the ascent to Kailasa, Vaikunta, Goloka, Chintamanigriha and Kaumara loka of Eastern Spiritual Sadhana and the many mansions spoken of by Christ. In exceptionally fortunate periods in the terrestrial evolution one of these Overmental Gods comes down here attended by all the psyches in affinity with Him and clustered round Him in a constant Mandala of love and harmony. This seems to be the case with Krishna and the Gopikas in this world, a temporary projection into this world of that great world of Harmony, sufficiently powerful to leave in the earth-memory a permanent impression and aspiration for the felicity of that heaven.

The crossing of the Overmental border and the entry into the Supramental and Chidananda Loka not only individually but generating the Yogashakti for that crossing by mortal man to produce not the mere Spiritual Man of the past but the new Gnostic Soul are the work of Savitri, the Mother.

Essays on Sri Aurobindo's SAVITRI - The Book of Yoga
— Prof. M. V. Seetaraman
ISBN: 978-81-903346-1-7
Publisher: Savitri Bhavan, Auroville
Binding: Soft Cover
Pages: 178
Price: Rs 125

The thirteen articles collected in this book were originally published in the journal The Advent from 1962 to 1965. The premise of the series of essays is to demonstrate the correspondences between Sri Aurobindo's description of the Yoga of Savitri, as seen in Cantos I, IV, V, VI and VII of Book VII, and the Mother's record of her own experiences in her Prayers and Meditations. Combining a detailed explication of lines from these Cantos with an examination of his broader themes, the author gives his insights on such topics as the personality of Savitri as an avatar, her encounter with the three aspects of the World Mother, or the triple soul-forces, and her work to build the bridge for man to cross over into the highest realm of consciousness and realise the new Gnostic Soul.

Publisher: Sri Mira Trust, Puducherry

Presently we are passing through the Age of Reason and perhaps preparing ourselves, without being aware of it, for the Age of luminous Intuition. The urge of the spirit of man for God-Light-Freedom-Immortality is certainly there, but it is not sufficiently deep-rooted. There is the positive human potential and it has to get firmed up in the spiritual values and possibilities. The present work is an attempt to discover and promote these values and possibilities in the vision of Sri Aurobindo and the dynamics of the Mother’s executive Force. There has to be a conviction that the culmination of the social development into the Age of the ageless Spirit is the secret yearning and motivating force behind the evolutionary Nature’s long painstaking and patient working. Humanity’s conscious participation in it will assuredly hasten this triumph and this glory. To make us perceive some of these elements is the sincere effort of Towards New Age.

coverSri Aurobindo's Treatment of Hindu Myth

Sri Aurobindo was a modern reinterpreter of the entire range of traditional Hindu culture. Not only did he propose his own original interpretation of the nation's heritage, but also wrote extensive commentaries on the vast mass of Sanskrit literature. As essential component of the culture he professed to revitalise was Hindu myth, which he salvaged in its entirety. This book, published in 1983 and now available with SABDA, brings out a perhaps less-recognised facet of Sri Aurobindo's work manifest in all his literary genres—his creative reinterpretation of Hindu myth.

Hindi translation of The Upanishads--II : Kena and Other Upanishads

The Upanishads has now been expanded and brought out in two volumes, with much new material published for the first time in book form. The single volume The Upanishads has been discontinued, with all its content included in the two new volumes, each available as an independent book. The Kena Upanishad is concerned "with the relation of mind-consciousness to Brahman-consciousness", writes Sri Aurobindo in his commentary on this work. "The material world and the physical life exist for us only by virtue of our internal self and our internal life. According as our mental instruments represent to us the external world, according as our vital force in obedience to the mind deals with its impacts and objects, so will be our outward life and existence." Along with Sri Aurobindo's final translation of and commentary on the Kena, this book includes his translations of six other Upanishads as well as several other translations and commentaries, and essays such as 'The Philosophy of the Upanishads'.

Hindi translation of The Psychic Being

The selections in this compilation deal with the meaning and nature of the psychic being, its role and action in the awakening to the inner life, and its influence on the afterlife and the process of rebirth. Many of the extracts clarify the difference between the soul in its purely essential form and the psychic being, which is the soul in its evolutionary, individualised form. The process of psychic growth and development and the central role of the psychic being in the individual's sadhana are some of the key concepts in Sri Aurobindo's Integral Yoga and are given prominence in this compilation, which is aimed mainly at the general reader.

Kannada translation of The Life Divine

Sri Aurobindo's principal philosophic work, a theory of spiritual evolution culminating in the transformation of man from a mental into a supramental being and the advent of a divine life upon earth. "In my explanation of the universe I have put forward this cardinal fact of spiritual evolution as the meaning of our existence here", Sri Aurobindo wrote to a disciple. "Behind the appearances of the universe", he explained, "there is the Reality of a Being and Consciousness, a Self of all things, one and eternal... This One Being and Consciousness is involved here in Matter. Evolution is the method by which it liberates itself". Evolution is possible, Sri Aurobindo argued, only because the Divine Reality has "involved" or "hidden himself" in the material universe. Involved in the world, the Divine, through His creative energy, gradually emerges in ever more conscious forms. Of this evolutionary process, Sri Aurobindo writes: "Consciousness appears in what seems to be the inconscient, and once having appeared is self-impelled to grow higher and higher and at the same time to enlarge and develop towards a greater and greater perfection. Life is the first step of this release of consciousness; mind is the second, but the evolution does not finish with mind, it awaits a release into something greater, a consciousness which is spiritual and supramental. The next step of the evolution must be towards the development of Supermind and Spirit as the dominant power in the conscious being. For only then will the involved Divinity in things release itself entirely and it become possible for life to manifest perfection". Man, the highest conscious form of life upon earth, is a key to this perfection; a "transitional being" he is destined to exceed his limitations as a mental being and become a supramental being. This change can be brought about through a methodised effort towards self-perfection in which the individual seeks to enter into contact and union (yoga) with the Divine through aspiration and self-surrender, opens himself to the Divine Consciousness and Force which descend into him and gradually transform his mind, life and body. This integral transformation, said Sri Aurobindo, will lead to such a perfection of terrestrial existence that it might well be called a divine life on earth. Contents: Book One: Omnipresent Reality and the Universe; Book Two: The Knowledge and the Ignorance - The Spiritual Evolution: Part 1 The Infinite Consciousness and the Ignorance Part 2 The Knowledge and the Spiritual Evolution Subjects: Philosophy, Metaphysics Extract: We speak of the evolution of Life in Matter, the evolution of Mind in Matter; but evolution is a word which merely states the phenomenon without explaining it. For there seems to be no reason why Life should evolve out of material elements or Mind out of living form, unless we accept the Vedantic solution that Life is already involved in Matter and Mind in Life because in essence Matter is a form of veiled Life, Life a form of veiled Consciousness. And then there seems to be little objection to a farther step in the series and the admission that mental consciousness may itself be only a form and a veil of higher states which are beyond Mind. In that case, the unconquerable impulse of man towards God, Light, Bliss, Freedom, Immortality presents itself in its right place in the chain as simply the imperative impulse by which Nature is seeking to evolve beyond Mind, and appears to be as natural, true and just as the impulse towards Life which she has planted in certain forms of Matter or the impulse towards Mind which she has planted in certain forms of Life. As there, so here, the impulse exists more or less obscurely in her different vessels with an ever-ascending series in the power of its will-to-be; as there, so here, it is gradually evolving and bound fully to evolve the necessary organs and faculties. As the impulse towards Mind ranges from the more sensitive reactions of Life in the metal and the plant up to its full organisation in man, so in man himself there is the same ascending series, the preparation, if nothing more, of a higher and divine life. The animal is a living laboratory in which Nature has, it is said, worked out man. Man himself may well be a thinking and living laboratory in whom and with whose conscious co-operation she wills to work out the superman, the god. Or shall we not say, rather, to manifest God? For if evolution is the progressive manifestation by Nature of that which slept or worked in her, involved, it is also the overt realisation of that which she secretly is. We cannot, then, bid her pause at a given stage of her evolution, nor have we the right to condemn with the religionist as perverse and presumptuous or with the rationalist as a disease or hallucination any intention she may evince or effort she may make to go beyond. If it be true that Spirit is involved in Matter and apparent Nature is secret God, then the manifestation of the divine in himself and the realisation of God within and without are the highest and most legitimate aim possible to man upon earth. - Sri Aurobindo If a spiritual unfolding on earth is the hidden truth of our birth into Matter, if it is fundamentally an evolution of consciousness that has been taking place in Nature, then man as he is cannot be the last term of that evolution: he is too imperfect an expression of the Spirit, Mind itself a too limited form and instrumentation; Mind is only a middle term of consciousness, the mental being can only be a transitional being. If, then, man is incapable of exceeding mentality, he must be surpassed and Supermind and superman must manifest and take the lead of the creation. But if his mind is capable of openig to what exceeds it, then there is no reason why man himself should not arrive at Supermind and supermanhood or at least lend his mentality, life and body to an evolution of that greater term of the Spirit manifesting in Nature. (p.846-47) - Sri Aurobindo
